How to Open Your Coinstash SMSF Account

How to open a Coinstash SMSF account — what your fund needs first, the documents to upload (ABN, certified trust deed, trustee details), each step and what happens next.

Setting up and verifying an SMSF (Self-Managed Super Fund) account with Coinstash involves a few steps and requirements. It's designed to be efficient, so you can begin managing your retirement portfolio with the largest choice of digital assets in Australia. Before you start, make sure your SMSF is properly established and compliant with the relevant legal and financial regulations.

Before you start: establishing your SMSF

Before opening an SMSF account with Coinstash, you need to establish your SMSF. This involves a series of steps to ensure it complies with relevant legal and financial regulations. While it is not necessary to consult a lawyer to set up your SMSF, many people choose to work with other professionals, such as:

  • Accountants

  • Financial advisers

  • SMSF specialist providers

These professionals can guide you through the process and help ensure your SMSF is set up correctly. Regardless of the method chosen, your SMSF must have:

  1. An Australian Business Number (ABN).

  2. A correctly drafted and signed SMSF trust deed.

Have these ready

  • SMSF name and ABN

  • A certified and signed copy of the full SMSF trust deed

  • Trustee details: for corporate trustees, the Australian Company Number (ACN) and the details of all directors; for individual trustees, full names and identification details for each trustee

Phase 1: Basic account setup

Step 1: Create your account

Head to coinstash.com.au to create your account. If you're signing up in the mobile app, choose SMSF as your account type — see How to Create a Coinstash Account (Mobile App). Enter your email address and a strong, unique password, then click Create Account.

Step 2: Verify email and mobile

  • Email: Enter the 6-digit verification code sent to your inbox.

  • Mobile: Provide your Australian mobile number and enter the SMS code provided to secure your login.

Step 3: Investor questionnaire

Complete the short questionnaire to help us tailor our service to your needs. You can also select Skip for now if you're in a hurry.

Phase 2: SMSF verification

Step 4: Submit fund details

From your account dashboard, click Verify SMSF. Fill out the verification form with your fund's details. The following details and documents are required:

  • SMSF name and ABN (Australian Business Number).

  • A certified copy of the SMSF trust deed.

  • Trustee details, which differ based on the trustee setup:

    • For corporate trustees: include the Australian Company Number (ACN) and the details of all directors.

    • For individual trustees: provide full names and identification details for each trustee.

Step 5: Upload your trust deed

Upload a certified and signed copy of your full SMSF Trust Deed. Ensure proper identification details are included based on the trustee structure: for corporate trustees, the ACN is needed along with director details, while for individual trustees, full names and personal IDs are required.

  • Need a copy? Your accountant or the provider who established the fund can provide this.

  • Certification: A Justice of the Peace (JP) can certify your documents for free.

  • Large files: If your deed is too large to upload or contains multiple files, please email them directly to [email protected].

Step 6: Secure your account (recommended)

Before trading, we strongly recommend enabling Two-Factor Authentication (2FA). This adds a critical layer of security to your fund's assets. See Securing Your Account with Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).

✅ What happens next?

Once submitted, our Brisbane-based onboarding team takes over:

  • Review time: We typically review applications within 1 business day.

  • ID verification: All members and trustees will receive individual ID verification links via email and SMS.

  • Same-day opening: Most SMSF accounts are fully activated on the same day once all trustees have completed their ID checks.

We verify every member and trustee because, as a registered Australian exchange, we're required to know who is behind every account. See Understanding Identity Verification (KYC).

Once you're approved, you can fund the account — note that the bank account you deposit from must be in the name of the SMSF trustee or company. See Depositing AUD into Your Coinstash Account. Advisers can find reporting help in SMSF Transaction History: A Guide for Advisers.

Troubleshooting

My trust deed won't upload. If it's too large or split across multiple files, email it to [email protected].

My deed isn't certified. We need a certified copy. A Justice of the Peace (JP) can certify it for free.

My account isn't active yet. Accounts are activated once every trustee and member has completed their ID check. Ask each person to look for their verification link in their email and SMS.
